Can regular tap water in your cooling system damage your engine? (I.E. Rust it out)
I read you should use distellid water but does it make much difference? I'm running plain tap water with antifreeze in my truck now but kinda wondering since I read that.
Thanks.
tap water should be fine. That is what I have always used and at every shop Ive worked at that is what we have always used. I have never seen anyone use distellid water for coolant. Batterys yes coolant no. your fine with the tap water.
Scotty
I have been wrenching on cars and trucks for a long time and have always used tap water for the rad. Yes, I have read and heard that some manuals and A/F manufacturers are recommending distilled water. I believe that the issue deals more with the contaminants in the tap water and their adverse or potential effect on the A/F more than rusting out the cooling system components.
On water cooled motorcycles, however, I have used distilled water and silicate free A/F, only in the interest of preserving the water pump impellers which tend to be sensitive to "crud".
