Sorry if the lingo isn't familiar, but...
I have what sounds like an exhaust leak on my '95 E250 (4.9L 300-6cyl). I took it to the muffler guy and he said it was the EGR and that I would have to take it to a dealer. I looked at it with my brother and we determined that the pipe from the EGR to the exhaust manifold was rusted through. The nearest dealer said $84 for this. Can I get by with exhaust high-temp tape? How long will this last and will it be bad for my engine? Can I find one of these online for a much much lower price?
My solution may sound crude. It is! But this is what I have done to repair and patch EGR tube on the straight sections. Obtain some brass shim stock, (It comes in rolls of various size and dimensions). sorry I can't remember the gauge of the stock, but you want something that is fairly strong, but light enough to cut with shears and bend with your fingers. Cut a 3 inch by 9" piece of stock and wrap it around the hole or splice. Secure it in place with two 1" stainless steel clamps. If you must patch a radius you can use that muffler tape. THe muffler tape won;t last as long.
Well, I couldn't quite get that to work since the separation is basically where the tube meets the rather large nut at the manifold. I tried the muffler tape, but it didn't even quiet down the exaust leak noise. I just decided to go get the tube at the dealer... I was going to have to do it eventually anyway. Turns out, my brother has a fleet account at the local dealer, so I got the $84 part for $60. I guess it could've been a whole lot worse.
