Hi all,
I have a 2002 F-250 Superduty with the diesel. Last week I started getting an intermittent "fuel in water" light. Truck ran fine, the light would come on for a few seconds then go , then come on again. When i got home I drained my fuel filter and got a little brown mucky crap out along with the fuel. Started truck, ran fine and no light. Drove about 100 miles, then the next morning, I started it up it ran like crap and died. Now it just cranks and pops and sputters and blows smoke. I had a spare fuel filter so I changed it. No luck, same thing. A couple of years ago, I got a bad load of fuel and the same thing happened. It cost me $1000 to have the tank and lines cleaned out and sending unit changed. So I did the same thing. Drained all the fuel, dropped the tank and completely wiped it out, flushed the lines, put in new fuel, and made sure it was getting fuel to the filter. Nothing. Same thing. My warranty just expired in July (of course), but I still have two years on the engine (if the problem is engine related, if not it comes out of my pocket). Any clues, suggestions? Do you think it's fuel related or could I have lost a sensor or something and it's just coincidence that it happened the same time I got the light?
Just got the truck back from the dealer. Good thing I still had a little warranty left on the motor or it would've cost me $5200!! First they said the high pressure fuel pump was bad, so they changed that. Then they changed 6 of the 8 injectors. Okay I can see a fuel pump failure taking out the injectors, but what caused the fuel pump to go bad? Is this something I need to start worrying about? Anybody else ever have this problem?
WATER you said you got brown mucky crap. Water is the number one killer of any diesel fuel system. That is what got the fuel pump and it takes very little. Water setting in the fuel pump and injectors for just say over night can cause enought rust to pit and distory the steal parts that's in them to the point that they stop working. But this happed once befor you got lucky the first time only a little damage the first time the second time not so lucky and what about the other two injectors the water did not get in them so there ok?
Yes, I believe you are right about the water. They didn't tear the pump apart to see what was wrong, but I suspect the pump went and took out the injectors. I questioned if they changed 6 why didn't they just go ahead and change the other 2? Well, I think they are going to have to. Truck seems to run fine, but I notice that it idles a little rough. I bet it's the other two.
