Tranfer Case?

Hello, I just purchased a used 99 Explorer 4X4, 4.0 5spd with 70K. I took it out to stretch the Auto-Low-High system and noticed this intermittent low sounding grunt when I banked left or right, and is louder when I make a sharp turn while in 4X4 mode. At one point there was like a bang-breaking sound as while making a sharp left turn. Can anyone tell me if I have a transfer case problem and what would be the fix, or what is causing the problem?<O</O

Thanks<O</O

need more info?

It sounds like you were in the open position? (4 auto?) These xcases use pulse width modulation to control the front hubs. This is trigered by steering position and throttle position to lock them up. In auto you have approx. 5% modulation then while accell. and turning it would jump to 60%. In 4HL you have aprox. 80% modualtion which gives you wheel hop in tight turns or lockup. Then in 4L you get 98% modualtion which is almost totally locked. You will not get ever get 100% modulation Clutches will not allow.

With some better info, I could give better analysis.
Hope this ain't too deep?
