1999-2000 7.3 longevity

I'm looking into purchasing another truck. I was wondering what the longevity of the 1999-2000 7.3 liter diesel motors are. Are there any things to watch out for ? Also what about the V10's back then. I have a V-10 in my 2002 F350 and have had no problems but it only has 25K on it.

Thanks
John

Hey HomeSolutions, welcome to FTE! we have two v-10's and they are really great engines. but they suck gas, mileage is really poor! but i love diesels, and when i take over the company i am going to change all of them out to diesels. a well-kept diesel will run 400,000 miles no problem. i know a guy on the OBS fourms, who has 570,000 miles on his '97. the 7.3's are hefty engines, and will treat you right if you treat them right with regular fluid changes, and i prefer synthetic oils. the only problem i really see is the CPS (Cam Position Sensor). alot of people have posted recently about erratic running/shutting off/tach not moving when cranking- all symptoms of a bad CPS. they give no warning, they just go out whenever they want. alot of people i know keep one in a toolbox, along with a 10mm wrench, so they can replace it right along the highway and keep rolling if one happens to go out. that is only the problems i see.

i run an 02, 95k miles, and nothing wrong, other than the stock, (junk), ball joints that came on all the superduties of this vintage... have done some mods, (see my signature), and the truck has incredible power now..! we run a v10 at work, one of the same year as my truck, it does not have the 3 valve heads like the new ones do, it has ok power, but it has to downshift to get it, and it SUCKS gas...! i completely prefer my 7.3 F350... in my opinion, there is no sense in having one of these trucks without a diesel... just doesn't make sense... it would be like running a cat dozer with an 8' fisher plow blade, your cat wouldn't be able to do all the work it is truly capable of doing... same with the F350 without a diesel..
