I have looked at a few sets online but can't figure out exactly the right application for me.
Heres how it is I have a 77.5 Crewcab 4x4 with a 400 mated to a C6 that is all used and looks basically untouched except for the fact when I pulled the oil pan and was changing out the main and rod bearings they were stamped 78's. Oh well so I'm assuming that it's a 78 engine for some reason swapped out. My plans for the truck are larger tires and a lift right now so i need a little more preformance over stock So I have replaced the Main and rod bearings, a hi vol oil pump, and have a used edelbrock preformer intake and a edel 600 4v carb that I'm rebuilding for it, A set of hedman fenderwell exit headers and flowmaster 50's. With the pan off I noticed the chain is in bad shape so I'm going to replace it also but leave the original cam in there until I do a full rebuild with a stroker kit or drop in a 460. Question is I need a set that will set the timing straight up from what I've read for a little more power with a few other little mods to last about a year. Any help is appretiated. Thanks
Summit racing lists double roller timing sets by Summit, Cloyes, Crane, Comp Cams, Edelbrock, and Ford racing. Cloyes has a hex-adjust set which is expensive and not necessary. Ford racing is also a little expensive. I am using a Cloyes set. I would not hesitate to use the Crane, Comp Cams, or Edelbrock set. The Summit set is cheaper, and probably as good. They all have multiple advance/retard keys.
Danlee I purchased the Comp cams timing set Part# 2121 magnum roller set. My question to you is I'm keeping the stock cam in there replacing the intake with a dual plane preformer(used) and a rebuilt 1406 600 carb, maybe an HEI dizzy, a good wire set and plugs, A set of hedman fenderwell ceramic coated headers, and replacer the main and rod bearings(that actually looked pretty good) Hi vol oil pump and milodon 7Qt pan. Should I advance the timming on this set to 4 degrees or install it straight up for the most gains? Thanks again ahead of time.
i'd set it straight up. according to bubba's info http://home.earthlink.net/~bubbaf250/parts/parts03.html
your cam has the earliest timing of all the cams already, unless your engine came out of a 78 car? i'd set at +4*. why do you suspect the engine swap? the part numbers on the old cam and crank sprocket might tell you what you have there.

I suspected an engine swap because of the main bearings and rod bearings beeing stamped 78's insted of a 77 like the truck. Maybe some warranty work or something in the 1st yr of the truck running or it was really late off the assembly line? I'll check the sprockets out when I get the intake and timing cover off for removal.
Ok you all again I ordered the comp cams 2121 set Magnum roller set. Now the problem is I'm far enough into this that I decided to splerge for a new cam and for the price and what I need the truck for I had decided on a Summit cam and lifter set part# SUM-K5201 with 0.509 int and ex. I didn't plan on touching the heads but as I looked over the information above in Bubbaf25o link I noticed that he found that stock springs have coil bind at 0.490 and 0.480 thus causing bent pushrods. Have any of you found this to be true and if so do you recommend a set of reasonable springs I could install?
