I currently have two cone filters on my intake. One on each duct. They are located where the Air Box was. Im pretty sure they are sucking hot air in. Originally, I had them running to the front..right behind my grill. Of course, the thought of Hydrolock came into my head, so back in they went.
Now to the question...where is a good place to run my filters so they'll get cooler air? Also, how common is hydrolock? The filters dont let any water through. (i tried).
woah what is hydrolock? Your supposed to clean and oil paper cone air filters. And in front of the bumper is where I have my 3" one and it works really good.
Hydrolock is ingesting a large amount of water into the engine. Since water doesn't compress, it would hydraulically lock the engine. However, it takes a LOT of water ingested to cause a problem. I wouldn't think the cone filter in the grill would cause a problem.
Just a thought, anyone tried an air intake at the base of the windshield. That's one of the highest pressure areas on any vehicle. I just wondered if anyone has tried that...
Best way to get cool air is do like a Mustang Power Pipe, go down close to the ground to get air coming in from the front. 'Course this isn't much of an option on a 4X4....
o.k memorex i suppose i should take some pictures of my intake for you. Maybe it would really help you out. The way mine is setup its like a drain. With it angled down there is no way that it could possibly suck up water unless it was submerged and I don't even like going thru water. I am going to do one modification tho by installing 1/4" rubber to the frame and wheel well to prevent water from splashing up and causing the filter to get wet. When I wheel I want the filter to stay clean and I just oiled it so it should be fine. I think mine works very well and makes a good noise when you accelerate.
Hydrolock won't be an issue for most of us because we drive our trucks everyday and if you are a serious wheeler you definetly don't want a CAI at all because you'd want a snorkel. Nuff Said.
Memorex I'll post you some pictures of my setup. Its a K&N deal with a 3" filter placed right in front of the grille/f250 intake runner.
