You don't want to be too full on atf. It will form bubbles which don't lubricate well. Usually if you are too full it will come out the vent or the dip tube and make a mess doing it.
You want to be between hashmarks and follow the instructions on measuring exactly. Time, temperature and shift sequence can drastically affect your measurements. Half a quart over is usually OK.
If you see lots of bubbles high up on the dipstick, then you are aerating and too full.
