What ever happened to Magic Johnson of the LA Lakers? He had one of those very bad diseases...I wonder if he is sick or just chilling?? I understand he won't be playing pro sports anymore, and his TV career fizzled, but has anyone heard about him lately??
I think he had HIV or something. No more sports, but I did see him on tv lately. I think it had something to do with flood relief or helping kids maybe. I didn't pay too much attention, but he looked ok anyway.
He's still around. He's involved with NASCAR in their "diversity in racing" program, if not one of the founders, I'm not really sure. Nothing radical, just trying to get more blacks involved in racing. A very polished, professional spokesperson for the program, from what I've seen. The more NASCAR fans, the better. Just the other night on the Speed Channel I saw where he was responsible for getting the first black vendor at a NASCAR sanctioned event up and running. A barbecue operation from Memphis, I think. Not sure if he still does, but he had an interest in a Busch team. He looked pretty healthy to me, considering he has AIDS.
I guess he got tired of milking the public eye for all the attention he could get.
I know someone will think that's harsh--you have the right to that even if it's wrong--but we all know that athletes DO NOT leave the eye easily and Magic was one of those guys. Michael Jordan was the same....but it's okay for Paris Hilton to be called out as such.
Now, that being said, he's not some awful human being, but he's got to be about the only person with HIV who has put on lb's since he came down with said disease! Props to him for that and keeping in relatively healthy state since all that happened.
He does have a stake in a movie theater chain, too, one of those on the west side of Houston, as I recall. Edwards Marquee Cinema or something like that....shows how much I care about moviegoing these days.
Last time I saw Willie T. was in a Craftsman Truck race maybe 2 yrs. ago. I think he tried to qualify for the Indy 500 about the same time. I think I've seen him in the Rolex sports car series a few times since then, but I watch so many races I can't remember. Sorry for the hijack- P.
he is a business man now. someone earlier pointed out the movie chain among other companies he wisely invested his money in. as ffor the HIV he is proof of how the disease can be beat with money, if only he can share his cure with the poor. a couple years back he said he no longer had any signs of the disease due to praying. i bet the less fortunate pray alot too.
That is what I was getting at!!!! This guy has been healthy for 20 years of HIV infection...it is because he has money...The millions of people that had HIV and died didn't have any money, no one was willing to lend a hand.
That is what is making me so mad about the healthcare system in this country. IF YOU DON"T HAVE MONEY YOU ARE SCREWED IF YOUR'E SICK.
But a stinking half-dead Saudi scumbag can walk right into a hospital and get a liver transplant.
It is time to clean the barrels, set the sights and shake up this bureacracy!!!
dont expect aids cure to filter down too soon. i never beleived the whole some guy went to africa, made it with a monkey too get the disease, then went back to makin it with humans. i think it was manufactured just like crack and spead the same way to get rid of lower classes. if you have the money you have no worries but thats another thread altogether.
Boy, did this thread ever get off track. ryn6609- I'm glad you don't believe the monkeysex thing, because HIV is transmitted through the exchange of bodily fluids, a bite, spitting, etc., including sex. A manufactured disease targeted at a specific class of people? Can you say "paranoid"? I agree that the amount and quality of health care in this and many other countries is directly related to individual wealth as well as politics. My wife receives treatments every 5 weeks for rheumatoid arthritis @ $4500 per treatment, not including the handful of pills every day. If you want to call it being lucky, we had good insurance when symptoms first appeared, because no insurer I know of would have covered THIS pre-existing condition. It's still not free, but there's no way we or anyone I know personally that could afford this. All I can say is stop cooking up theories and become an advocate for reform in the health care and research systems. It won't change by itself.
The millions of people that had HIV and died didn't have any money, no one was willing to lend a hand.
Do you really think the government would spend millions of dollars a year on HIV/AIDS research if they didn't want to help everyone, regardless of income? Any local health department offers free condoms, sex-education, & STD tests. Wake up. It's not about money.

Regardless of how it started, I'm sure it wasn't manufactured. I bet the guy who came up with crack had no interest of getting high & rich, he just wanted to get rid of lower classes . Kind of sounds like Hitler.
Money=no worries. I agree, because NO celebrity has EVER died of AIDS.
