I have an 83 Mustang GLX that the previous owner dropped a carbed 5.0 inplace of the factory EFI V6...The problem is the car doesnt run, its gets gas but no spark, And its a huge mess of wires under the hood mainly becasue of all the old EFI system. So i wanna take the cheap and easy way out and buy a regular mechanical vacuum advanced distributor and put that in place of the electronic one, BUT my dad wants me to mess with all the electronics and figure out the wiring nightmare to get it runnin......I like the my idea a helluva lot better, but my dad wont let me buy the new distributor until i get a second opinion....So what do yall think i should do?
One problem you'd face in making the current configuration work is simply that you have a V6 engine computer and a V8 engine. Aside from that, the fuel injected motor had an array of sensors that kept the computer informed so that it [the computer] could in-turn control the ignition system.
Much as I'm an advocate of making things work, put a Duraspark II on there and things will get much more simple.
Have a 79 Chrysler Cordoba with an early computer "Lean Burn System" computer with a electric sensor/distributor that went out in it shortly after I bought it in 1997. Instead of getting another one, I switched it over to regular distributer/points. You could do that easily enough and even Chrysler had a backup report on doing this sent to it's mechanics at the time, I found out. All you had to do was adjust the cold jets on the carburator to prevent it from "dying" at stops.
This tip helps my son when buying his own 79 Cordoba three years ago. A local had it but could never get it to run right. He had gotten it from HIS son who apparently changed over to a regular distributor as well. Just never adjusted the carb and his father did not have a clue what to do. He just saw me drive mine and figured I might be interested in his too.
