My 51F1 12volt is using an aftermarket light switch, cheapo with a fuse mounted on it. (I do have a new wiring harness installed). From time to time, the switch fries, and I put a new switch in. (Gets pretty hot, even w/out trailer or shorting). As I'm planning a long trip and some night driving, any ideas on a more sturdy/reliable switch? Would a later model fit, from junkyard?
I am using relays to turn the lights on and off. Then I use the headlight switch to turn the relays on and off. The switch only has to draw enough current to activate a relay which is less than 0.5 amps. A set of 65 watt high beam lights draws 9 amps then you still have tail light and running lights to add to that.

Thanks for the info, Chris. I've been thinking about doing that, but don't know the details. I'm assuming you bought generic relay(s), placed and powered them upstream of the headlights, again, upstream of the dimmer switch? Did you put a circuit breaker in the line between relay and lights? Should I?
