Hello there, fellow Blue Oval fans,
I hope someone out there can help me out with my problem. I am the very proud owner of a 1990, fullsize Bronco XLT. The problem is that the starter will not activate by turning the key. This is due to a worn actuator between the key cylinder, and the ignition switch activating rod. The ignition switch is fully operational, and I can activate acc. and run positions via the key. I do not have the technical savvy to tackle the inner workings of the steering column. I would prefer to install a push button starter switch under the dash. If anyone has any info on which wires need to be included in my install, (eg. ign., proof1, proof2, ign. bypass, start, etc.) and/or other tips, it will be greatly appreciated.

i would recomend fixing the actuator rod. while rite now you are only missing the start function, sooner or later you will start to loose more and have to fix it anyway. the piece that breaks is only around $13 from ford, and only takes 3-4 hours to put in by a person with only marginal repair skills. if you are highly talented mechanicaly, it only takes 1 1/2 -2 hrs.
I think that tjc transport is right, but I was wondering if the problem was some place else. He did not give any information as to if it would start by shorting the Battery cable to the "S" terminal of the solenoid.
Thanks a lot fellas! This is exactly the kind of info that I was looking for. At first, I was seriously considering replacing the $13 part myself. I spoke with my mechanic, (a friend, and certified for many years) and he will replace the piece for me, however he can not get to it for another week. I liked the push button idea for security purposes, except that I have to agree with tjc transport concerning the inevitable breakage further on down the road.
Thanks again.
ask and ye shall receive
