I have a '92 F-50 Flareside ExtraCab and my cat is shot. It looks like an aftermarket cat and I only have one (close to the Y-pipe). The exhaust then goes to a muffler that has 2 outlets for that dual exhaust look. It normally sounds a little throaty and I get really good gas mileage (about 23 Cdn. mpg on highway). Is it worth replacing the exact exhaust setup or could I get the same performance with a single exhaust system (exit behind the pass. side tire)??
you can install a bassani high flow cat an muffler system that will give you the same look as factory and much better HP and economy try this web site http://www.proficientperformance.com/bassani.php here you will find the same style as your muffler with single in with dual out of the muffler for that dual pipe look and the rumble is awesome I have the 3 in system in my 95 super cab
There are several factors involved when you start making changes. If your double exhaust is a 2" system than you have a total area of about 6 1/4 sq. inches. A single 3" exhaust has an area of a little over 7 sq. in. but has considerable less resistance to the exhaust gas flow so even if you have an equal number of bends it will have more than double the capacity. My guess is that a single 3" conversion before the muffler would work just as well and might even improve performance but anything less would likely have an adverse effect.
Thanks for the information. I assumed a bigger tube would produce better power and I know the OEM cat would be restrictive as well. I like the look of 2 pipes coming out from under my rear bumper rather than a single pipe behind the rear wheel but whatever works best I will use.
