engine noises - 2nd attempt
Apparently I didn't do something right on my first rebuild attempt 302, EFI. I have about 1500 miles on the engine, getting a tapping sound from the passenger side of the engine. it makes the tapping all the time-idle or driving, all rpm ranges. I looked for exhaust leaks, checked lifter preload, ran without the serpentine belt, and looked in the dark for arcing from plug wires. If I pull the plug wire off cylinder 3 the sound goes away.
So I've accepted that I need to pull the engine and start taking it apart. Any input what the cause is or what I should be looking for. As careful as I was with assembling, maybe I put a rod cap on backwards, I don't know. Should I pull ALL the piston/rod assemblies and take them to a machine shop to be checked/RR'd?
Thanks.
I have seen a new cam and lifters not properly broken in have the base of the lifter chewed off by the cam, without hurting the cam any. Put in a new lifter and never had another problem with it.
Info I missed in first messsage: Everything is new except the block - cylinders where miked, still had visible crosshatch and where only honed to remove glaze, and was decked. The rods where reconditioned also, and new wrist pins installed with the new pistons.
I used plenty of cam lube, primed the oil pump, Motor was broken in by running 2000-2500 rpm for about 1/2 hr, changed oil, babied it for 500 miles, changed oil again. I did alot of reading here before the embarking on this adventure. I had some issues at first with misfire caused by incorrect spark gap, is it possible that damage something internal?
I think I will take that advice and pull the intake and get the lifters out and see how they look. Can I check the cam by using a dial indicator to check lift on the vavles?
Thanks for the help
Brian
