Knock Sensor Question '86 302 EFI

Hey guys, ive got a wuesiton im REALLY hoping someone can answer here: I JUST found omehting out i should have noticed before i put the motor back into my truck of my rebuild process...the lower intake manifold i had in the truck piror to engine removal, i took it out and tkaing one of the bolts out..it got stuck, and there was no other remedy but to use a grinder tool..thus completely screwing up that bolt, so i went and picked up another lower intake manifold at a steal at a junk yard..in much better condition, well, now i noticed, after bolting the new one on, the new one doesnt have the threads for the knock sensor??? Why would this be? was there a year that Ford came out with a truck 302 with no knock sensor or what? Can i just run the engine with no knock sensor or bypass it somehow?? ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated..thank you and

GOD BLESS THE USA!!!

Just drill and tap it. That's how we did it.

How much does a tap set go for more or less? and what size tap do i get? I feel like an idiot when i say ive never tapped anything though i know what it is? Oh, and is it just as easy as putting a drill bit on and just making ur own threads? thank you so much

Drill the bolt with a small drill bit, then work your way up with bigger sizes till you are over half the size of the bolt. (using smaller bits and working up helps keep the hole centered easier) Once you get there then get a easy out and see if you can take the bolt out with that.

Another way is to drill the bolt (again progressing in size) till you are right at the size of the original hole. You can then use a tap to pull out the thin metal left over and clean your threads at the same time. This way you can reuse an original bolt size.

Both of these ways work real well, the key is to take your time and keep the holes centered when drilling.

If the bolt is stuck bad then the second option will probably work best. If the bolt is not set in real hard the first option will work, or you could even use a left-handed drill bit. I have had left-handed drill bits actually back the broken bolts out before.

Joe, go to the parts store and take the knock sensor with you. The parts guys should be able to sell you the correct bit and tap, and maybe even show you how to use them. I know around here our napa guys are great. The autozone guys?? I think the only requirement for employment is that they speak english...

you can get a cheap tap and die set from here: http://www.harborfreight.com (from $10-$50); but a higher quality one like a craftsman set will set you back over $100; most good sets will come with detailed instructions... here is some tap & die basics on the web (http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/taps.html).

don't you love the parts store workers, i had one tell me that i don't even have a throttle body on my mustang, i had to take him to the lot to show him before he would search for the gasket, then they had the wrong felpro part number and tried to give me the wrong model.... gotta love em.
