after a long "testing" drive today of the 73' i noticed my radiator cap was leaking due to the water boiling over i have replaced the cap already when this had happened before should i change the thermostat it has a new water pump already what would make it boil over and also my spindle on the inner side does not have roller bearings where the axle shaft goes in it has a brass fitting is this strong can it be replaced with the bearings thanks
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Jul-02 AT 11:00 AM (EST)]I'll try to answer a couple questions.
Radiator cap: Your 73 cooling system is not designed to run full like modern cars do. Your coolant should be at least 1" below the bottom of the cap opening, when cool. That air space inside the radiator is designed to let the coolant expand when it gets hot. Otherwise, everytime you fill it up, you will just push it right back out again next time the engine heats up. So, if you are filling it all the way up, leave the 1" and see if it still leaks. If it does, then you need to look at other problems.
I don't know 4x4s, so I'm sorry I cannot help you out there.
good question villagidit...
I have seen the spindles with either bushing or bearing. I am not sure what the diffrence is, but I was told buy a guy that if it had the bearings that they have been replaced. I don't know for sure though. I know my 75 has the brass and they are orignal. I'd like to know from someone who knows the real answer too.:7
