I believe 39s still had transverse leaf springs, and although I don't know what year Ford started using 9" rear ends, I bet it was long past the point where they eliminated transverse leafs. So, there isn't a 9" rear that will BOLT in without modification, unless someone has an aftermarket replacement...
And then you would need a custom driveshaft to replace the torque tube/driveshaft combination, which might be interesting to get a modern Spicer-style yoke to fit the output splines of the (3-speed?) transmission.
That's a start. Good luck. You have quite a bit of fabrication ahead of you.
If the stock drivetrain is in place, you will have to convert to an open drive system. There are places that sell the needed parts in kit form, or you could scrounge up the parts and make it yourself. Like mentioned, you would have a single tranverse spring, so first order of business would be to convert to paralellel spring (first came into use on 1/2 tons in '42). Again, you can buy a kit that has the parts needed, or make it up yourself. Installing a 9 inch (first used in '57) won't be a direct bolt in if your truck is all stock, but it can be done.
Thanks guys for the info I took a look at what the job would take, and decided to look maybe for a 3.78, or a 3.54 conversion instead.
Thanks again for the info, been a big help.
