Question Timing/Ping Question

Im gonna bump up the timing on my truck a little...for kicks and giggle of course. I thought it was set at 12* already, but my friend checked it and said it was 10*btc.

Im gonna set it myself tomorrow. After searching, im still a little foggy with the details. I know to disconnect spout after truck is warm and to loosen distributor. How do I advance it? Turn the dizzy? Im gonna use an Actron timin light.

Also, how does the engine PING sound..? Does it actually sound like PING! lol sorry for these dumb questions

Yep - to adjust it you just spin the distributor around. After you tighten it back down, check the timing again. It likes to slip while you're tightening, and it does not take a lot to change the timing afew degrees.

Ping sounds like someone tapping on the block with a hammer to me. Your perception may be different. Generally, you'll know it when you hear it. Turn off the radio and roll up the windows and floor up it up the steepest longest hill you can.... oh, wait, you're in Texas. Never mind.

If you are talking about the 1993 in the photo it will not change anything.

I may be wrong but this is my understanding.

The 10* BTDC is a range setting for the PCM. All that you will do my moving the timing is limit the range the PCM can move it and that is about 10* either side of where you set it.

The computer has somewhere in the 20-30° range of advance that it can dial in. Setting the base timing more advanced will in turn advance the total timing when the computer kicks in its advance. The 10° is just the reference point where Ford tuned the computer. All injection timing and ignition timing are based off this being at 10°. A couple additional degrees base timing will add those couple degrees to every timing point in the curve, so it will change the overall timing. The computer will not compensate or run less advance simply because the base timing is more advanced at the distributor. Think of base timing just as a starting point for the computer controlled advance.

Hello, could you guys answer something? I replaced my engine year back, and put stock dist. back on. Checked timing and is at 10 deg. (without spout disconnected)
Problem is, w/ bolt loose, dist. does not turn. I even broke off couple of thin casting lines on side base of dist. Truck runs ok, but would like to re-check it correctly w/ spout disconnected and go from there. Sounds like I either leave it, and check plugs for mixture, or get new dist.

Thanks, Doug
