My front end has been clicking for a while and I believe it is the hubs. The clicking frequency is relative to the speed of the truck and is much louder while in a turn. The truck has been well taken care of and to some degree unfortunately… has a dealer installed lift kit.
They replaced the ball joints as they were loose but they said the clicking noise is coming from the rims. They are brand new Weld Racing rims and I just rotated them (front to back) and the clicking sound remains up front.
My question is... what would/could make the sound, as I want to be able to take it to the dealer and specifically tell them what to replace as the truck is under warranty.
kemerick...
you could have hub that is not dissengaging. The noise could be coming from the frt axle u joint. reach behind the wheel and see if the axle shaft will spin it should rotate free, if not you may have a front hub staying engaged
Had a similar problem on tight turns when the hubs were in the LOCK position. When in AUTO, they dont' make the noise. A bonus was better mileage as well.
I had the same problem......it ususally occurred when I used my front drive shaft (in 4 wheel mode). I simply noticed it when I turned so I checked that my hubs were in auto mode.....the clicking continued.....so I went and switched the hubs to lock then back to auto then tried again......this eliminated the problem.....its happened to me only a couple of times since then but just keep doing the same thing. Another thing.....after you use your 4 wheel drive .......shift your truck in Reverse and let it hold for about 10 seconds or back up a few feet then shift back to drive......this seems to help with fully disengaging the front end.....noticed this helps in eliminating the clicking as well. If you have aluminum wheel......check your lug nuts every month or so to re-torque them.....sometimes they loosen and your rims will shift causing some noise as well. Good luck!
I think its in the wheels, i have the same problem with my welds and it drives me crazy when i have my windows down, and they do it in the front and the back, someone told me its the center caps on the wheels. I think most tire shops can fix it.
Had it happen to me on a sharp turn only, just ended up greasing the ball joints and it went away put a bit more grease than normal it might just work.
yes before you tear your front end apart pull the center caps out and test drive with out them. If it goes away try to get correct sized caps or get two pairs of pliers(sp?) and put them right next to each other and bend about 4-5 times(somewhat the same area around the cap). Keep which ever one you want to be the center in place, take the others and move to the other side of pliers and do it again until you have 4-5 tabs that are "raised" and remount. this usually take up the space it needs to put pressure on the cap from both the wheel and disc assembly. Sounds confusing but I had to do it on my 99 with aftermarket wheels. Do it once and you will completely understand it. Some tire shops might even do it for you. Or go in for a rotation(like discount/ americas tire where they usually do it for free if your a regular customer) and when they have the tires off they will let you check the brakes and mess with the caps and it wont be alot of labor for you. My brother works at Discount so he has seen this quite a bit.
