I have a 73 F100 with a 460. It has a dura spark distributor with an MSD blaster coil and an MSD 6A ignition module. My truck quit on the side of the road yesterday. I looked down the throat of the carberator and it was getting plenty of fuel. I started looking at ignition components and found that the ignition module was very hot. I let the truck sit there for a couple of hours and cool off. Once it cooled off, it fired right up. Now it only runs about 15 miles at a time....then it quits again. Any one have any bright ideas?

My truck is a 73 model....it originaly had points....there is no Duraspark ignition module. All I have is a Duraspark distributor, MSD blaster coil, and MSD 6A ignition module.

I don't know if it matters, but the smaller red wire that hooks to the coil connection in the picture, is hooked to the original coil + wire that had a resistor in it. Your original points coil + wire should also have a resistance wire or resistor in it, unless someone has done some re-wiring.
You didn't say where you have it mounted. You can go to www.msdignition.com, click on support, and then click on manuals. They have an installation manual you can download, that won't take too much time if you have a highspeed internet connection. I am sure somewhere they are going to say mount it away from any heat sources, and also where there is good airflow. If you have room, probably behind the grill in front of the radiator suppport would be the best.

Franklin,
You're not understanding. Everything is mounted and wired up and has been for about 3 years. Everything worked fine until a few days ago. What I need to know is if there is a way to troubleshoot the system to know exactly which part needs replacement.
Mike
Well, you have two choices. The pickup in the distributor or the MSD box itself. What I would do is get it hot and make it quit. Then get some cold spray and spray the pickup in the dist, and see if it will start. If that doesn't work, try cooling the MSD box with something, and see if it starts.
