OK Guys....this may seem like an elementary question, but how, and where can you check the fluid level for your transfer case? I noticed mine is leaking in my '77 F-250. There is a tag on it and all I can make out is "205". I assume this means that this is the NP205 transfer case. I have never touched a transfer case before so I don't know anything about them. I looked around and didnt see anywhere where I could check the fluid. I'm taking off to go camping this weekend and don't want to take the truck very far unless I can be sure all the fluids are up. I also plan on playing in the mud a little bit up there so the 4WD will be in use. I just don't want to lock anything up....I'll be a long way from home. Also what could cause the leak? Could it be a gasket or something? I have no idea where to begin. Thanks for the help.
Ok man
How you check the fluid in the 205 and for most other transfer cases is look at the transfer case . on nthe back there should be a square shapes bold anour 5\8 or so. take the bolt out and stick you finger inside it. if you feel oil pretty close to the level of the hole, its fine. If not, fill it up just enough so that the oil doesnt go over the bottom of the hole.
Hope this helps
The bolt is on the back toward the pass side and about 1/2 the way up from the bottom. I can't get my finger in there to check, so I use a wire rod. It should be very close to the hole.
If you need to a some more, you might want to get a pump from the local autoparts place. I think there about $10 and fit onto the top of the 1 gal gear oil container.
