I've often considered putting a ram air system on my '73 F100 daily driver in hopes of more power/mileage. Especially since I'm constantly seeing FE427TP's picture of his ram air on every one of his posts...very cool...
Would there be any advantage (besides the 'cool' factor) in putting it on my daily driver. It sees about 40 miles a day at 70mph (2800rpm). It seldom goes much past 3000rpm and never over 4000rpm. Would I get any benefit from it? I currently have a 14x4 open air filter.
I'd say you can see the same gains by making sure that your engine compartment vents warm air quickly or just making it so that you aren't sucking in the hot air from the radiator or having headers heat the engine compartment any more than they have to
Every 25* drop in intake air is equal to something like 3 to 5% in power gains. It also helps to cool the engine because you are not sucking in pre-warmed air. Ram air is very nice and I have been thinking of doing the same (though I love to mud run my Bronco so I'll use a scope to keep the mud out).
i wanted ram air but then i just bought an 4' open air breather to go over my 1 barrel carb. it works better. more air can get in, but some of the polution hoses can't be connected
