Yesterday my Explorer developed a serious vibration on acceleration between about 25 and 40 mph. A brief search of the forums suggest u-joints. With the rear end jacked, I grasped the driveline and gave it a good wiggle at each end and they seemed tight, but that's probably not a good test. It's an auto tranny 4wd. The front drive hasn't been engaged for a few months. Anywhere between 25 and 40 mph, if I let off the throttle, the vibrations go away.
Mines starting a vibration, I can only feel it in my foot though in late 2nd early 3rd, then it smooths back out, I also have a shimmy going over speed bumps that I have been told could be related to u-joints. I'm not sure if this is 100% correct, but i've got people telling me this, and then I see here that u-joints may be the problem, so i'm going to have a look at mine and we'll see from there. How hard is it to do u-joints, I've never done them before?
Found it! It's the u-joints. There's no way to tell if they're bad by looking at them...they look perfectly good. After removing the drive line, I found both u-joints frozen to the point I can't move them by hand.
OK Good. That would have been my very first suggestion at such a low speed vibration. Tight may not mean good. It might mean rusted. Kepp us posted for any ~65 MPH vibrations - this is always a good topic for these gen 1 Explorers.
