Bolts and nuts?

How are you guys treating the bolts and nuts which show after painting? I don't want to paint he first and then tighten them which will break the paint and I do plan to just replace some of them with nice hex polished ones but I'm speaking of the type such as the ones that hold the door hinges etc.

Since I bought all new fasteners for everything, left them just as purchased. That is how they would have came from the factory, except the hinge bolts. They would have been painted. Left mine unpainted.

With the bolts that I knew were going to show, I used originals without washers where possible, then after painting replaced them with polished button head with polished washers.

On the door jamb bolts I,m with you. I am afraid to remove them now that they have been painted, because I dont know if the washers on the new ones will cover any damage, I'm thinking of trying to pre cut? paint to contain any damage to an area small enough to cover with the new polished ones.
