So I finally got 2 CD's burned out of this stupid 10 pack. I've got one left. Anyway, my question is what are the best cd's to burn on to? I'll never use Memorex again, as 7 out of 9 were unable to burn. It kept saying "unable to burn to cd, there is a problem on your cd, please insert a blank cd, etc." I lucked out with the 2 that did work, but I doubt the 10th will be any good.
We got some LG cd's when we got our computer, and they worked pretty good, but I can't seem to find them anywhere. I also heard that Verbatim cd's were good too. Any others?
That's funny. I bought a stack of Memorex blank cd's from a local computer store over a year ago and I have yet to run acoss a bad one. I still have 50+ of them left also.
When I try to burn a cd at high speed using Nero....some tracks won't play. I use Winamp to burn all mine now at 2x speed and I have no problems.
I like Verbatim and Sony CDs, Memorex I haven't had too many problems with but I have had CDROM drives and burners that for some reason just don't like certain brands of CDs.
Hey bigrig,
I have used a full range of different media over the years. Right now I'm using some cheap ESA discs (DVD) and haven't had an issue. Sometimes you run into a bad batch from the manufacturer.
My cousin wanted me to burn some items for her, and every disc I tried from her stack failed. Tossed them and used my own discs.
Any made by Taiyo Yuden are good. You can get order them from places like Newegg or www.rima.com. In the past I I have had good luck with Fuji's which were mad by TY. Unfortunately that changed as far as their DVD's were concerned and I started having problems with them. I currently use Verbatim DVD's, and have had no problems, even though they are not made by TY. Overall, from everything I have read in newsgroups and other places, TY's seem to stand above the rest as far as quality and lack of problems.
i got a 100 stack of cd's from staples for $19.95 with a mail in $20 rebate, making the 100 cd's free. i have used around 75 of them now, and not 1 bad one in the stack. with the memorex 10 pack, 5 did not work.
I have had very good luck with verbatim and also the less expensive prodisc?, in fact the only trouble I have ever had was also with memorex...go figure. I remember when they were considered the best in audio recording.
I think a lot of it will also play into your computer. I have used more expensive Sony, Kodak, TDK and even the cheapo NAPSTER branded discs and only burn coasters when *I* mess it up, or when some weird copy protection prevents me from making a backup of a movie I own (strictly for archival purposes, mind you)
If you have a lot of other things running that can DEFINITELY turn a CD into a coaster, your drive can play into it as well and your software. It seems a lot of people here have used the same or similar discs. In reality there are only 4-5 manufacturers , Taiyo Yuden being one of the better (as Kingfish51 said) and they just OEM them for others.
Keep trying till you find a brand you like and works with your setup.
Well, it's so out of the blue that I actually burn a cd... When we first got our computer, we were burning stuff all the time. Since we got married, I've burned 4 cds. 2 were picture cds, 2 were music cds. Anyway, we had some pictures of my buddy's wedding that they wanted copies of. I told them I'd burn a cd for them and mail it. I think I went through 3 cds before I got a good one. That was even playing with the burn speed and stuff, turning it way down to like 4x rather than 16x. Once that one worked, I tried making a music cd, and wow, if 2 in a row worked, I was happy. I didn't want to press my luck making a 3rd.
Anyway, the reason I'm asking is we've probably got a couple thousand pictures of my niece, and another thousand of our dogs, for no real good reason other than to take up space on our hard drive. I want to free up the space but keep the pictures without having to get them printed. And since these Memorex cds suck, well, you get the idea. Thanks for all the input so far.
I have a Lite-on burner in this pc (52x32x52x). I use mostly Verbatim and Maxell CDs and burn at full speed and haven't had one bad one, yet.
If I'm making a 'back-up CD' I can burn 'on the fly' from my Samsung DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive, that spins at 52x.
I bought Nero 6 Platinum for the software.
Again, I must be really lucky. Not one coaster, yet.
The Verbatim CDs have a darker coating on them. One of my buddies said that he has less problems with CDs that have the darker coating. (???)
The Maxell's have a lighter coating. (No problems, yet.) Go figure.
I had problems with the last batch of Memorex I used also. The problems seemed to be worst if I had the disk near capacity. If I only filled them to ~80% they worked OK. Even then some files that were checked at the time of burn were unreadable later.
I've only used two brands. Both came from OfficeMax. The first was Hi-Val. I think I used 150 of these with no problem. The other was Hypermedia. I have used about 90 of the 100 & I have had about 8-10 duds. Even the duds would play fine in most CD players, but not my DVD player. I never had a track that wouldn't play at all. Some just popped & hissed & sounded staticy. I can't really complain though. I paid around $20 for the first 50 Hi-Vals. The other 100 Hi-Vals & the 100 Hypermedias were $19.99 each with a $20 rebate (same deal as tjc stated).
I have used countless types out there and have only had 2 coasters. They were both by Memorex. Computer Essentials has some cheap CD's that work pretty good, Sony makes good ones, Maxell, no-name brands at Office Depot that are like 100pk spindles is what I usually get.
