transfercase leak & first post
Well this is my first post here. seems like a really great site. I just bought a 1977 F-150 4X4 to have something to take up and down the mountain for hunting. I was looking for an old beater but found this one and it is in fairly good shape so I am going to redo alot of it to make it nice.
Here is my question: The transfer case (NP 205 I think) is leaking from the rear output shaft. it looks like the fuild runs down the OP shaft to that first U-joint and drips off there. I have found nothing as far as manuals or diagrams to figure out what seal or bearing/seal i need to replace. It looks like an easy fix without having to take the whole t-case out but I don't want to start without knowing what I'm getting into.
1) what seal or bearing seal do i need to replace here to stop the leak.
2) where can i find a book on the 205.
autozone has a rear OP seal but it looks like it is for that last part of housing and not the shaft. the only other parts I have found for this is a whole rebuild kit... I really don't think it needs rebuilt just a new rear seal. thanks for any help you can give.
I believe the transfer case assembly / disassembly instructions are found in the repair manual for your truck. You can get a manual in paper or cd format from several places - check the motorhaven link on the left of this page. As for buying the seal seperate from the rebuild kit I would talk (call) someone like Six States Distributers, Inc. http://www.sixstates.com/
Sometimes they are kind of grouchy but they do have access to single parts like that and tons of research resources for axles and transmissions.
I have chilton's manual and the orginal service manual but neither of those have much info on the t-case. the chilton's only covers install and removal. Motorhaven has a " 1977 Ford Truck Factory Shop Manual" but it is $50. I would hate to spend that much and it not have it either. I may call them to find out but would like to find a better (cheaper
) source of info. I would really like a book on the np 205 it's self if I could find one. seeing how it is one of the most popular t-cases ever i thought that info would be easy to find but it hasn't turned out that way yet. thanks on the prats source, as soon as I find out what I need I may give them a call. If all else fails I'll take my dad's approach. open it up, take stuff out and goto the parts store have them "match it" bring it home , beat on it until I decided it doesn't fit then repeat until it works.
that brings back memories.
by the way, would Ford still carry parts for this?

Not certain if they have what you want, but they do have a large list of parts for the NP205...and other T-cases too.
