Well, here we go:

1. Good Tuneup - high quality plugs and wires, cap, rotor, correct timing
2. Good Free Flowing Intake - use a good paper filter
3. Good Free Flowing Exhaust - Size will depend on motor displacement
4. Properly Inflated Tires - This can affect mileage significantly
5. And last...Keep your foot out of it.

With 3 out of the 5 ( no intake work yet and a little heavy on the gas), I just got 14 mpg with my 1990 F250HD 4x4 5 sp Ex Cab with 4.10 gears going 70-75 mph. I'm hoping for close to 16 once I get my intake done.

This is assuming you don't have any stored codes like a bad O2 sensor, etc. If yo udo have codes, fix those areas first.

I've done some little things. I've done the tune-up, free flowing exhaust, keep up on bearings, brakes, and tire pressure and I see 18-20mpg with a 94 F150 w/302, E4OD, 3.55 gear, and MAF equipped. I took off all of the emissions(no check in Michigan). I've also put in an electric fan and messed with some pulley sizes to reduce accessory drag on the engine. I'm heavy into the throttle at times so I really see 17-18mpg, but have gotten it up to 20 with moderate driving. And all I have done with the intake is put on a air pick-up snorkle from an F250(better location and flow) and a K&N drop-in filter.

What jbalestri suggested does work. You should first make sure you don't have any stored codes for problems that need fixed and that your vacuum pressure is good.

Tune-up and Tire inflation will do wonders - change all of your filters - pcv too! You'll be suprised how much that will do for such a low cost and one afternoon of time.

RC Dan - how did you manage to run an E4OD with a mass air motor?

I think it was a set-up used for the towing package. It came this way from the factory. I think either you or someone else asked this question in another thread or two. I know I don't have the only truck on here with this set-up stock.

Now, if you do just mainly city, stop and go, slower driving, a cap's weight will hurt your mileage. A tonneau is a more preferred choice. And, on some trucks, having the tailgate down actually decreases mileage. It can take away that pocket of pressurized air that sits in the bed at higher speeds and can actually increase your drag. I'm not sure if this study was done with an F150 or not.

I agree with RC Dan. Someone (a college) did a wind tunnel study with a truck with the tailgate down and up. It actuallly showed higher drag coeff at a certain speed (highway I think) with the tailgate down. A smooth cover (hard plastic recommended like ARE makes) is preferred even over a cloth tonneau cover.

I did the same thing with my '96 150 SB. It has the 4.9 & M5OD. I got 16.5 without and 20.5 with tonneau. I was a little shocked to see the difference. The cover made little difference for low speed driving.
