Just bought a Ford...

Hey folks, I just got a 1991 Ford F250 Super Cab Diesel non turbo. 117k miles, Manual trans. Super clean interior, decent exterior and a freshly remanufactured engine. Apparently it had an ATS turbo kit in it and the prior owner didn't use Fords required Supplemental Coolant Additive and burned out the pistons. Runs strong, plumes of black smoke under hard acceleration, but goes away once the strain is off. Anyhow, I don't know jack about these diesels. This is my first one.

Anyhow, I got it for $2k and I couldn't pass it up. What do I need to know to keep this thing running forever, give me all the necessary n00bert information so I have this truck a good long time. Thanks in advance.

post a question under diesel engine forum and those with a diesel engine will be able to tell you the dos an donts of a diesel...being that I was a diesel mechanic for the military. Do tune it up and have the injector timing checked out, change fuilds when the intervals require it and your engine will go for many hours / miles and if you can flush the engine block to make sure your oil galleries are all providing oil to all parts and the coolant system flushed. as for the black smoke when getting on it some of that is normal for a diesel real heavy is not normal and would indicate to much fuel or and inproper fuel air mixture
