Lets say an exhaust system cost $350.00
If you drive 12k miles a year, at 20 mpg thats 600gal.
Now if you get 2 mpg improvement ( don't think so,but maybe )to 22 mpg thats 545gal.
A difference of 65 gal
65 gal at 3.00 gal = $165.00.
So $165.00 + $165.00 = $330.00 it will take 2 years or 24k miles to get you money back and start any savings.
Something to think about.

Believe me, I did the number crunching on my diesel Excursion, before pulling the trigger on the trade in. An associate of mine has the same exact model and he put in close to 2500 in engine upgrades. He is now seeing 17mpg around town and a solid 20 on the freeway. I didn't want to dump that much into the motor, because it would be years before I would see my money back. I still may do the mods on the Ranger, just to make the engine as effiecent as possible. I never averaged more than 16mpg on the freeway with the Ex. If I had seen that around town, I wouldn't have done the deal. But, it's all water under the bridge now. I just needed to vent.
I have the same truck, except with stock tires. You want to increase your mileage, slow down to 65 mph. You will get your 20-22 mpg. If not, you are driving your truck like it is an Excursion. Different vehicles require different driving styles. The 3.0 is not a fast truck, it is very slow to get moving, if you push it to much, you will have motor problems, and your mileage goes out of sight. I also have a 96 with a 3.0, 4X4, ext. cab, with 228K miles on it, you have to beat the crap out of it to get less than 20 mpg.
By the way those mods area waste of money, and time. If you want the most gain, go back to factory tires.
Little known fact: The 3.0 motor is in more Rangers/Explorers than any other motor. Almost as many 3.0, as 2.3 and 4.0 combined.
first of all if you think the 3.0 is bad try the 2.3 that has even less power. i've never heard of anyone around here getting 16mi. out of any excursion. the 3.0 does not have any power, everybody knows that now but it is a good motor, i think most of us would agree. if its taken care of it will last. i'm a pretty concervative driver myself but my mpg. is crap mainly because of the 33" tires i've got with the stock drivetrain but you know, its a TRUCK! if i wanted 50mpg. i'd bought a rice-burner! i hear mopeds are pretty good on gas! jk!
