To some, the 295's are questionable while others say they are the max. It has been said that some shops won't put 295's on that rim while others will. They stick out past the rim a bit more. With the 285's you'll be fine.
BFG A/T seems like a good choice, not noisy and good on the mud & snow.
Not a real soft or hard tire.
I have stock 265's on mine but will upgrade to a wider rim and a 4" lift for 315's.
Personally, I'm going to err on the side of safety.
My first question would be what gear ratio do you have ? if its 3.73 stay with 265's
any bigger tire will change the truck to a dog for pulling things and fuel mpg's go down
deersniper
not if you tow alot makes the tranny hunt alot, also drops the rpms out of the powerband too much.lugging the engine is not good for the valve train in the engine.
Yes ,you can put them on I agree but it changes the responsiveness of the truck.
IMHO

You do have to watch trying to run a wider tire on a rim not designed for it is the center of the tire wears out quicker. Also you have to watch out for if you hit a pot hole to hard you run the risk of blowing the bead.
If you want a bigger tire get the proper width rim to match it tire manufactures do say what width you need for a reason. If you are looking for a taller tire have you considered 255/85R16s. You are doing the right thing by getting rid of tires that have checked sidewalls they are dangerous.
I imagine the truck is still running the stock Firestones which are crap anyhow the wear good but thats about it they handle like crap.
