I have a 98 F150 4.6 and I have a few questions.. I know on my 4.6 Mustang GT it was a waste of time going with shorty headers. What do yall think about long tubes vs. shorty's on these trucks? How much of a PITA is it to do a header change on these trucks. I know on my Stang it was a major job due to the space limitations ( had to drop the motor out the bottom to get them on )
What brands are yall running? What kind of results did you get from them?
Thanks, TinyG
give it time they will log on and answer, I would do a search of the site though and you will fine lots of answers off of previous threads. Sorry I don't mess with them.
I have a 99 f150 4.6 and just finished putting headers on it a few days ago. Overall it made the exhaust much louder and has more throat than with just a cat-back system on. I installed pacesetter shorty headers on mainly becasue they had the best price compared to others.
Overall the job is a royal pain in the ***. The driver side is very cramped and the egr tube tends to be rusted onto the stock maifold. Now the passenger side is similar to your mustang, the bottom studs on the manifold can not be reached due to the motor mount. I had to take the mounts off and raise the motor about six inches to allow for enough room to reach. After removing the manifolds the job is just a matter of bolting up and and finishing. Although a pain to install makes the truck sound and perform better than ever.
i have gibson shorties. they add a better power band from about 2400 rpm to 5000 rpm. i had the same problems as board67 with the install. but over all it wasn't to bad. if i got another truck. i would do it again.
I just bought a set of Hedman shorty headers after a long hard look for long tubes they make them for 99+ but not for 98 . I have another question will Mustang MIL's work with a 98 f150? Also does anyone have an off road y-pipe and if so how much did it help? what brand? and where did you get it? Im looking at pulling all but 1 converter off and putting some MIL's so that light will not be in my eye. These trucks have entirely too much exhaust restrictions I think atleast 4 convertors I have heard that a good muffler shop can just fabricate one but need to know what Im facing so I can have all my parts in a pile.
Thanks
