I Posted this in the axle/diff. forum and got nothing yet so I decided to try here. I picked up my new front axle for my 74 Highboy. I got the axle off a 78 f250 4x4.
I was wondering how solid this thing is? I'm assuming decent... I was looking for a Dana 60 But no luck so I went with this Dana 44.
Also How heavy are these 44's? We were four lifting it into my trailer and it was heavy as hell.
What gears do you think are in the Diff? Fender emblems on the truck said Camper special, but I wasn't aware that Camper specials came in 4x4.
The gears in the axle are most likely 3.54's but the only way to know for certain is to pull the cover and count the teeth on the ring gear and teeth on the pinion gear. Divide ring gear teeth by pinion teeth and that will be your ratio. 4x4 Camper Specials were produced, some had D60 fronts and others did not. I'm not sure why this is the case though, maybe it was a dealer option that could be upgraded for extra $$? The weight on the axle is a little under 400 pounds if it's a D44 (I've seen 340-410 listed), the D60 weighs about 500. You'll have 30 spline inner shafts on that axle. It should hold up to normal use fine so long as you're not running a really large tire or beating the poo out of it.

Thanx, So I just assumed it was a dana 44, you think it might be a Dana 60.
It should be writen somewhere on the axle right? Where abouts? so I can check.
Well it's most likely a 44, but some came with the D60's. If the knuckles have caps (steering arm on driver's side) held on by 4 bolts in a squarish looking pattern it's a D60. If not then you have a D44.
