Trailing lights for ford explorer '97

Before A recent fishing trip, I replaced bulbs on my boat trailer. In the early AM, I noticed one of the bulbs was out. Stopped at a gas station, got the correct bulb, put it in, worked fine, then put gas in my Explorer. When I went in to pay, I noticed the lamps on the trailer were dim. Not thinking much of it, i went in paid. An our down the road I noticed I had no tail lights. I stopped to check the connection and so on which were fine. At the campsite a day or so later, a buddy of mine hooked up his truck to the trailer and it was fine. I hooked my explorer back up and still nuthin'! In looking under the truck, I didn't know where to begin. I do see that a red wire on the rear driver side of the vehicle appears to be spliced in to a wire that runs to the bumper and then to the light hook up. All fuses appear to be ok. I'm not much of an electrician. Any ideas?

Check the ground wire on the Explorer's harness to see if it's corroded where it hooks to the frame. If you have a multimeter or a test light (or know someone who does), check the pins on the 4-pole connector; also check the sockets for corrosion.
