My uncle has diabetes and he takes fish oil supplements to help him control his blood sugar. It seems to work, as he hadn't tested it in over a year, but just to prove his health to us he checked on the spot and sure enough, it was well within the normal range. Just a thought...

Anyway, a little advice that might help you eat better... think of food not as a reward or something you deserve, but fuel. It's a lot easier to eat healthy foods if you're not looking to replace everything you normally eat with its sugarfree or lowfat equivalent. You have to think of food as nothing more than fuel. Will these sugar free cookies provide me with the necessary energy to get through my day? (Not, "will these sugar free cookies taste as good as regular ones?") It requires self restraint at the grocery store (try not walking all the aisles... stick to the perimeter only, which is where you'll find the meat, cheese, veggies and fruits, and some breads). It's hard initially, but if you can manage for a few weeks it actually becomes harder to eat junk than to eat healthy. On days that I eat a lot of simple sugars and/or fat, I am far more sluggish than on days when I watch what I eat. Even if I eat less, it's easier for me to get through my workouts when I'm not bogged down with sugars and fats.

Hey, thanks for the offer, but i already have a video on it. I just don't think i'm ready for one yet.. the injections don't bother me much at all right now. Maybe in a few years i'll be considering one.

Thanks again though..

You can unhook it for up tp an hour with no ill effects. So even though they say you can shower with it I choose not to. Where would I tuck it??? Never mind. Bed time I used to just wear boxers and now I will just wear light shorts with a pocket and you don't even notice it is there. Seriously the best thing I have done for my self as far as diabetes goes. If anyone has questions feel free to pm or email me and I will tell you all I know. (it will be a short conversation LOL)

Neither of us want to go back down those roads again. Not at our age (he will be 65 tomorrow and I just turned 54) Your health is the most important thing next to keeping food on the table, a roof over your head and manage to get the bills paid. That and raising your kids.
We're 6 months apart, I'm 51 and she's 50. She's been showing signs of Memopause since she was in her mid 40's but the Dr. keeps telling her it's not showing up in tests. We're both going through frustration about our health and diet. We joined a gym a couple of years ago and were going strong and then I wrecked my knee, now I have arthritis, but it's gotten better and we're going to go with a Trainer in Nov. Prior to the arthritis I had dropped from 240 down to 225 but I've gone back up to 237. That's still better than my high of 270. We're celebrating our 30th wedding anniversary in Oct and are still very much committed to one another. We have the common goal of trying to get our health improved we just have different perspectives
I thought I was pregnant when it all started. Had erratic menses for a while and finally went to my doc who said "Nope" when the tests came back negative. He was the one suggesting Menopause at this age.

About that time I picked up Gail Sheehy's book "The Silent Passage" which was about Menopause and how not all women went through it the same way. Not everyone had all the "classic" symptoms either, as happened to me. Also how culture plays a part in how a woman might receive the news and learn what to expect. I thought, "43" was rather early to go through this but, as the book suggested, asked my mother and grandmother some questions. My grandmother also started in her early 40s about the same time.

The best thing for her is to go to a gym as weightlifting or bearing exercises does help prevent osteoporosis by keeping the bones dense. Losing bone density is one of the lingering after effects of estrogen loss during and after menopause.
The exercise keeps this at bay while helping alleive any arthritis that may show up at this time. There are a whole host of other positive results as well.

But after menopause/age...it does get abit harder to lose the fat and, sometimes to keep it down. Recovery is not as quick as if you were younger. However, we just have to work harder. That and a good diet is most of the battle.

You might try Bodybuilding.com and it's Forums There is an "Over 35" and "Female Bodybuilding" forum there I have always found helpful when asking questions. The people there are very friendly and a great help to newbies. Most are there for the very reasons you are doing this. To keep your health up.

Erika,

I appreciate the advice, but I do understand where your Dad was coming from. My diet isn't perfect I admit, but it's a lot better than it used to be believe me. I'm still trying to break a lifetime of habits developed when I didn't have diabetes (or was blissfully ignorant since I have no idea how long I've been this way).

I'm going to a conference on eating properly put on by my local hospital, which is something I've tried to get my doctor to refer me too but he's got his own ideas. And I can't go to another doctor because no doctors in my area are taking new patients.

She knows about the hard to loose weight part. She's actually better at the exercise part than I am, she's a 2nd degree black belt and trains twice a week. (part of the reason I don't like to argue the low fat /high sugar connection in case she kicks my a** up & down the block <g>)

I'll bookmark the links for both her and my use.

My problems are all in my head. I've gone from a Hi of 245 down to 194 and back to 230 and exercize is the key as well as eating right.
But my head just wont cooperate when if comes to eating right. I can look at those sausages, tell myself it's bad, and eat it as I'm saying that!
Sometimes I wish I could get into my head an cut some nerve so I can look at food as just the necessary evil.
I take shots n' pills. I exercize and stay active but that's not enough when I eat like I do.
Someday I'm gonna wish I could send everyone of those bad meals back!

I've had it for 30 years now. Been taking injections that whole time. I was diagnosed when I was 3 and am now 33.At my last check up I found out that my vision has gone from being 20/20 to 20/30 and I do have some minor nerve damage in my feet. Doctor says it's absolutely amazing for someone who's had diabetes for 30 years.

My wife's doc did a A1C and said her count was like 14%, about 355 Not sure if she's I or II, trying her on pills to see if that manages it before putting her on insulin.

Been there, done that, doing it again. My problem is buttered popcorn, I'm addicted to it I can't watch a movie without a bowl of it.

I managed to get to a seminar on Diabetes where they focused on type II. Learned a bunch of things, but so far only 3 have stuck. Hope the rest comes to me as I go along.

Some one said to think of your body as a machine and food as fuel and nothing else. Don't know if that will work.

Spin, I can tell you from experience it wont work with me.
Spin, I used to go to Movies solely so I could sit in the Dark with my Big 7-UP and a bucket of Hot buttered popcorn.
If I couldn't see me doing it, niether could anybody else!
You could watch "Around the world in 80 Days" if you had enough Popcorn n' 7-UP.

I got my A-1C today.... 6.2. That's a big deal for me. It's usually up around Seven.
I'll keep working on it, we all will.
She told me to get hold of my Diet. Try to eat a little bit from time to time, so the BG dont drop so low, and the Uncontrolable Hunger takes over.

As much as I love food, I dont like piecing all day long. "Grazing" my Grandmother called it.
I stopped Potato's n' Bread a long time ago. Except when the bad little boy in my head says we absolutly NEED some Biscuits n' Sausage Gravy.
Gumbo, Ettouffe, Mudbug boil's.....all that stuff just aint helping me either.
If my wife was a terrible cook I'd live longer.

Thudpucker,

It won't work with me either, I've heard that theory for years, I understand it on an intellectual level but it's doesn't stop the cravings. I told my wife to hide the popcorn and not let me go to the movies for a while. That's the only way it'll work for me.

Spin, when I see what we are writing I am reminded of a Bear I saw on TV.
The Bear was in a Zoo.
He wasn't eating, went into Depression, was losing his Hair, got grouchy etc etc.
His health was going bad.
They called a Shrink for animals.
He figured out the Bear was just over eating and was bored with his life.
The Shrink made them hide the Bear's food in smaller amounts, in different places.
When the Bear got hungry, he had to go find something to eat.
The treatment was a success.
So my wife hid my food But I finally found some of it in my fishing tackle box. It was in a little jar, marked 'Salmon eggs'. Some nerve that gal has?

As I mentioned before, when my husband realized he had to drop all the heavy foods, he was shocked. Thought nothing else would give him the needed energy to work. "Rabbit food" just would not cut it...so he thought. He also had his favorite food cravings and he just plain 'steeled" himself from giving in. Quit cold turkey.

Talking about a "grumpy" bear for awhile. That and trying to figure out what he could eat from a diabetic list.
