I have aquired the above vehicle in the UK in the form of an RV without any manuals.
The end of the indicator arm rotates and has a push button. There is a wire taped to the outside of the arm which goes into the loom.
Can you please tell me what this is for and how it is used? I have played with it on the move but it does not appear to have any effect.
It sounds like it was added by either the RV people or a previous owner. Ford would not have run the wires exposed like that from the factory.
Who knows, if it was added by a previous owner, he may have taken whatever it worked, and left the button there.
If subford is right, and you do not have any other cruise control buttons, you should be able to look at the carb linkage, and see a cable, or lever hooked to a diaphram or a black servo motor box, which would actuate the throttle for the cruise function.
Thanks Franklin I will check the Holley Carb and see what there is.
Subford. I do not see anything like your picture. The end of the turn signal arm rotates and appears to have 2 clicks whilst rotating. At the tip of the arm there is a spring loaded button.
Another silly question. The horn on UK cars would be the buttom on the tip of the turn signal arm today. There is no horn on the steering wheel controls but on a vehicle this old I would expect this to be in the middle of the wheel. There was no wire conected to the horn in the engine compartment so have jury rigged a switch tapped to the centre console. Please confirm where the horn button should be and will rewire correctly.
The Haynes manual available in the UK for Ford E series US trucks is not very detailed.
It has one large spoke going across the middle, and the horn buttons are little rubber pads on either side, out near the outside edge of the spoke. I also found out if you did have factory cruise control, the buttons would be beside the horn buttons on the steering wheel spoke.
In 84 they where still using a darkblue wire running up inside the steering column for the horn.
A hot wire is run to a horn relay under the hood somewhere. But the relay coil is not grounded. Instead they run the darkblue wire which is the ground for the horn relay, up into the steering column, and through a contact brush under the steering wheel. When you push the steering wheel button, it grounds the darkblue wire, which activates the horn relay. Then the horn relay contacts send power to the horns.
Franklin Have not found any unusual linkage. Did use your link and found that the Diaphram on the Holley is a Decel throttle control kicker. This is conected by tube to a switch of some sort with electrical connections mounted on the rocker cover on the passenger side of the engine. I presume this is the cruise control system. The vacumn unit does not appear to be touching the throttle linkage but I will work on this. There is no movement in any of this system whilst the engine is running so looks like time to play with the circuit tester.
The horn would appear to be as posted but needs to be rewired.
Thanks for the help Franklin and Subford. Keep up the good work
