I called on this ad, it was a 77' 351 W , C6 tranny and a 9" with 3.00 gears he said,,out of a E150 van,,he said engine runs good, 125 K on it,,$500.00 bucks for all. My question is,,How is a 77' 351 W, for building into a good HP motor ?? Any good or bad about that year ?
I am rebuilding a 68' Torino, came with a 302,, 4 gear,, will bellhousing fit the windsor engine ?
Same bellhousing, so no problem there. '77 was the first year of the crappy heads, unless it has the D5TE-EB truck heads (you can't really tell without pulling the intake manifold and looking at the casting number with a mirror) so you might want to plan on chucking them. The heads on your '68 302 would work with minor modifications, but I think I'd be looking for some other heads.
Earlier 351 blocks were a little beefier, but the '77 should be okay. There was a change in deck height on the 351 in '74...from 9.480" to 9.503" so you would have the taller deck on the '77.
Look at the oil pan. It may have rear sump for the van. You need a front sump for your car. You can still make it fit, but it's just another added expense to find the right pan and pick-up tube+ dipstick.
Hey guys thanks for the responses. Now I have the 302 that came out of the car, and a 67 289, that I am (or was ) planing to put in the car, the 289 is .40 over, have a good set of early heads(no thermactor hump in exhaust ports)with a 3 angle valve job all done up,,just waiting to be assembled, oil pans from both,,I have a ford 4V cast intake for the 289,,but will probobly buy a Edelbrock intake for it . Just mentioning the stuff I have for the car,,,but then I see this 351 W for sale,,whats you opinions on a built 289, compared to a built 351 W,,???
Later,,,,,,,,,,Mark
I like the 289/302, in part because of the slightly more compact size and lower weight on the front end. (not a big deal if you're just interested going in a straight line, but in a lighter car can come into play a little more when you get into the twisties) For a little bigger car like the Torino, which in '68 was still unibody and built on the Mustang/Falcon/Cougar platform, it's probaly not real crucial...but if you already have all this 289 stuff, (and very little of it can be used on a 351W), then maybe build the 289, or look for a late model 5.0 roller engine to build. I think the EFI adapted to an early car is way cool.
Could you elaborate on this? Are they prone to failure, or do you mean "crappy" as in poor performance? I have a '77 351W and it's pretty much a smog motor. It can't even chirp the tires.
Actually, the '77 351W heads were fair. In '78 the 302 and the 351W started using the same heads. They had bigger, low compression combustion chambers...69cc, up from 60.4 on the '77s, along with smaller valves. The 302 had gone to this head in '77.
For a good chart showing the different heads along with their respective casting numbers, see here:
