I have read the article on rebuilding the 9" here at FTE. I bought a MotiveGear set of 3:70s and an install kit. When I got to the shimming after several time of trial and error I came up finding out I need between a .004 shim and a .009. That's the only ones that came up with that I could get close, plus you only get like 6 with a gear set. The 004 is too deep and the 9 is too high. The oem shim was a 13 way too high. My question is...How many shims come in a kit? I think I might need a 6 or 7 to remedy the pattern.
Another thing is I have been setting my back lash at 8-9 as Motive recommends. An axle repair shop I called about shims said that I shouldn't bother with setting backlash that tight. Anyone heard of this? Still experimenting, I will probably buy a shim kit since I plan to build a 9" for my demo wagon anyway.
Something I discovered is that a 69 f-100 housing is very close to being the same width as the 80's chevy wagons I run. I just need the mounts for the trailing arms.
They should have sent like a few smaller shims than your .004 so that you could stack say a .001, a .002, and your .004 to get to the .007 total shim thickness.
Also I would go ahead and set your backlash at .008-.009 because the new gears have to wear down a little bit before the break in. Don't set it any tighter than that though becuse while they are turning they heat up and expand taking up a bit of that space.
ya they only gave me 6 total shims. I believe I will keep the backlash in mind. I will be putting some miles on it when it's done. I'm going to bulid an extra with some tall gears for highway driving. Gotta love the versatility of these axles.
maybe you can go to Napa or some other parts store and buy some additional shims...
Also they say that if you install a used ring and pinion set you can set the backlash around .010-.012 or so because they're already broke in. Just thought I'd pass that bit of info on.
I called a few stores and they have no shims. The only place around here is 35-40 miles from me that even works on rear ends. He has a shim kit with about 30 diff shims for $15. The gear set is new from Motive Gear. I think I might stockpile a bunch of these carriers and start building them. The market seems to be thin around here. You either do it yourself of take to CTC in Chandler, IN. That's where the local drag strip is located also.
