87 B Series Starting Problems

Hi all, just bought a 87 Ford Courier 4 wheel drive (Same as Mazda B Series) to build an while work has slowed down a bit. Went for this rather than a F series as it wont fit in my garage. It started fine until the next day when all I got was a click and nothing else. Thinking it was the battery I replaced it and it still did the same thing. I checked the 80 Amp fuse under the hood and replaced that with a new one as it looked dodgy with the wires twiseted together. It started! I done some cartwheels but that was shortlived as it wouldnt start the day after. I have half a tank of gas in it (I put it in after buying it)so it isnt empty. Now im confused.

I checked the earthing of one of the cables and it didnt make a difference. I can hear a buzzing noise under the hood after I try starting it, whats up with that? All of my accessories work (Lights, Radio etc) but no start. Any ideas? I'm gonna be pretty happy with myself if I can get this truck going consistently without taking it to the mechanic.

welcome to fte ok that buzzing sound is your fuel pump or pumps.
i would check for codes to see before putting any money into the truck. don't know how to do that read the first top posts in the ranger forum and you'll have an idea

first project car i bough was a '79 lincoln mark, and i had the same problem. sounds like you have power to everything but the starter or alt. so i recomend you maybe check the solinoid. (hope i spelt that right) don't worry it's a fairly cheap part. if that don't work clean your battery terminals and connectors.

keep me posted on how it works Arctic!

Thanks for the replies! I finally got around to starting it up today. I tried shorting the starter terminals and the starter wasn't spinning. Got a lot of sparks though and had to stop as it didnt look like a good thing to do. Did a bit of playing around with a multimeter, checked battery voltage and it was good.

Felt a little down after that so I got a hammer and lighty tapped the starter. Got inside and turned the key and it started up! High fives were going on inside the garage. I have a feeling I am not off the hook just yet. Is it safe to say the (Bendix?)spring was stuck? The guy I bought it off lived by the ocean and I wonder if that had anything to do with it. (stuck starter/solenoid)

Will this affect me when I drive on the road. By that I mean cutting out on me, etc (it isn't registered yet so I dont have achance to take it out on the roads yet)

By the way great site, lots of great stuff to read. I just bought the Chiltons Vehicle library for the vehicle so that will keep me busy. This is a bit of a learning curve for me but I am enjoying it!
