You could use the steering box as you describe, but why bother? The OEM box is an ancient worm and sector design, and most are worn beyond safe use. Just purchase the mount and pitman arm from Mid Fifty www.midfifty.com and bolt in a Toyota PS box. Do a search here for all the particulars. Works great with the beam style axle/suspension, and should you later decide to convert to IFS (IMHO only marginally better than a properly set up beam) you can always sell the Toy setup.
where can i find the VIN plate on the 55 i'm getting? couldn't find it on the door pillars or firewall. just wanna make sure the vin matches the title when i get it.
The VIN is stamped on top of one of the frame rails in front of the cab. Some have found it on a cross member - but almost all have found it on a rail.

You can let us know you have something for sale, but the details should be handled through the private messaging system or e-mail. Another option is to post a message directing us to an ad you've put in the classified section of FTE. That usually works out well.
JB,
First, Welcome to FTE!
The data plate should be located on the inside of the glove box door on a 53-55 and on the driver's "A" pillar on a 56.
George has a data plate decoder on Earl's World for your reference.
Good Luck!
Welcome to the wonderful world of the Blue Oval. I guess I'm a darksider and am also one of those perverts that have a non-Ford engine in my '55 F-100. I also have a 05 Explorer, 89 F-250, 92 Aerostar van, and, to make things interesting, a 66 VW bug and a 42 Harley. Right now the '55 is getting the most attention. Good luck with your project. I look forward to seeing pictures. Bob.
