I have noticed the same problem with my 99 XLT 4x4, especially going up grades at speed. A little input to the wheel and it seems like the wheel make a quick darting to the side. It's disconcerting to say the least. I am very interested to see the possibilities listed in this thread. Becasue I get some massive shaking after I hit a bump in the road at highway speed, I had been wondering if if I had a loose steeering box or something else.
i have a 97 that also has the dartiness issue.. would like to hear if anyone comes up with a fix.. curious if this has anything to do with a bouncing i cant figure out in the front suspension.. thanks to all that may help.
The 2002 and earlier Expeditions handle like pigs. I put on Rancho shocks and a Hellwig sway bar on my 2000 and it still sucked. Both my 1998 and my 2000 were all over the road. My 2003 is Waaaaaaay better and I'd never go back to a pre 2003 again. I'd have to say the older ones are downright dangerous in an emergency manuever. I sold the 2000 for this reason.
Is anyone aware of a problem with the 98-99 ford expedition variable assist steering? At freeway speeds the sensitivity of the steering in our expedition is dangerous, and a small quick movement of the wheel will put you all over the road. It is difficult to drive at freeway speeds, with constant oversteering. I know the assist is stuck in the low-speed mode. I know two others that have the same problems with their's and one had his fixed. I am surprised there hasn't been a recall.
Is anyone else aware of this and do you know where the problem is and how it can be fixed?
Dan
I fully agree with sterling11. I have had my 99EB for about a year now 77K miles. The steering definately feels dangerous. It takes getting used to. I do not drive above 75mph. I saw major improvement with new tires but still feels dangerous. According to owners man. steering is supposed to harden at higher speeds but i do no see a difference. Tire prussure will make a difference on any cars handling. This steering problem is definately a dangerous. I suggest do not drive over 75mph. I am going to try stiffer shocks by Monroe. I will post my result. If this does not make a difference, I am going to slap a for sale sign on it, that will fix the problem.
