Bad gas

Just thought I would share this story with everybody. Right after hurricane Katrina I head to New Orleans with my travel trailer for our employees to stay in. I stopped at a gas station near Baton Rouge for fuel. There was a truck making a fuel delivery while I was there. When I left there my truck started starving for fuel at approx. 50mph. I could pull over and cut the engine off and then start it back up and I was good for approx 10 to 15 miles and it would start starving for fuel. When I got there I was unable to locate a new fuel filter so we just cleaned the old one. After two weeks I have changed the fuel filter twice and now it seems to be ok. I learned later that this station had been out of fuel before I arrived. I think when this tanker started dumping his fuel he stirred up some trash in the tanks.

I used to work at a couple of stations while i was in college.Getting water out of the bottom of the tanks is true even if the they are not totally empty when they are refilled. That's why I avoid stations with a tanker in the lot. We seen it almost on a weekly basis. The best way to fix it is to drop the tank and totally empty it. Second best way is to pull the fuel line off under the truck and pump a couple gallons into a container, then treat what's left in the tank with DryGas for a couple of weeks to absorb the rest of the water.
This is less of a problem now here in Michigan because we went through a mandatory tank change a few years ago; the steel tanks had to be pulled and double liner fiberlass tanks had to be installed or you were out of business. Many low volume stations shut down rather than go through the costly switch. The steel tanks had built up a large volume of water in the bottom traps over the years because of condensation. When the tanker dumps fuel through a six inch line the water gets stirred up and dispensed.

Yeah I also don't go to a gas station that is just getting filled. I heard it is not good because it mixes up all the water and other things. Just what I heard...

I have had to drop my tank twice due to bad fuel. Very costly at the dealer. Like your idea of DryGas. Is that available at any local auto store? Would hate to go back to dealer if it happens again.

DryGas is available at auto parts stores in addition to ChinaMart (WalMart). STP Gas Treatment also works but is usually more expensive than the store brands.

Gas pumps are supposed to have water seperators on them. At least, I've seen them when the pumps are opened up - it's obvious there's one in there. Too bad they never drain them, it appears ...
