You know
it is funny how those old highboys exude attitude! before i had to swap out my 35'' gateway mudders for 31'' tires (inspection purposes--gotta love jersey! NOT), my truck elicited all kinds of looks! folks just got the hell out of the way for me. I still dont know if it was because of the 'humming' from the tires, the noise from the straight duals or just because its ugly! in any event, those ole highboys rule. andy, if u find one, suck it up! LOL
YUP, Like I said, Highboys RULE!!!! I bought my first one a couple months ago...76 F250 Highboy, dana 60/44, 360, np435, np203...and hey i got mine for $2500 WITH A PLOW AND TOPPER...AND ITS SHARP!!! Shiney paint still...very little rust, and it came from the original owner.Good deals do happen and if you find a highboy, GRAB IT!!!!
out of all my highboys--i have yet to get one with a 203 full time case. how do u like that full time system? what about yr gas mileage??
matter of fact, i have yet to see a F250 higboy with a 203 can u believe that? was that an option?? anyone??
regards
ben
my 75 F250hd 4x4 came factory with the np203. it was a explorer and had the northland special edition. limeted slip rear, block heater, overloads, enclosed hd 44 front end one ton brakes (wider in back bigger around in front). high output heater (which is a joke). and no lockouts. they are awesome sports cars! they will corner like no kidding with that full time case! if you dont turn it over you can power around almost any corner! I have made a few sport cars almost loose it in the corners behind me when they think they are behind a old slow pickup. kinda funny to watch them try to regroup in the mirror! cant beat the looks of any ford 73-79 when they sit high weather they are true highboys or not!
I was told that hi boys were only 3/4 tons and produced thru 1977.I'am looking at a 1979 F-150 that i'am being told is a hi boy with a factory lift. Were any 1/2 tons hi boys?
You wanna talk about good deals! I found my 1975 highboy sitting in the middle of a field for only $100. All i had to do is slap on headers, dual exhaust, and a brake job and it runs like a charm. It has a 360, dana60 rear, HD dana44 front, 4.10 gears, and a np205 transfer case. That is one hell of a deal. It will be a looker as soon as I put a new bwd on it. Good deals are out there and I didn't even have to look very hard.
Hey Will
you said that your truck had a high ouput heater? hmmmmm on one of my trucks that i cut the cab off of, i noticed it had an emblem on the dash "high output heater" i never saw this anywhere. do you know if that was part of an option package for a certain trim level. I dont know because the body was trash and i torched it off. it had the BIG closed knuckle frontend too and a NP205. On my early 77 F250--i also have this thing that looks like a block heater that is attached to the bottom rad hose? is this stock too? these 2 trucks i dont know the history too well! if u know any info, care to share?
Highboys are horrible. They have no power options, they're loud and they smell bad, they don't steer worth a damn, they don't come with the best axles, they don't have the biggest motors(you all want 460s right) , they're heavy as h3ll so they sink like a stone in the mud (unless you have tires as tall as you are) and the majority have all been hacked at by kids looking to pound them through the swamp. They require hours of maintenance to keep them in good shape (like most things 25+ years old). They look bad *** because they are bad ***. No overdrive, no automatic, no cushy ride, no gas mileage, no quick shifts, no easy swaps, no greenhorns.
They're the best damn truck ever made and I wouldn't sell my two for anything.
Your breakdown of what a hihgboy is helped me alot. I have a 73 f250 4x4 and was trying to figure out if it was a highboy. And by golly it is. Thanks for the great info.

I just found my high boy rolling chassis, which is in immaculate condition, in the want ads for $50. I couldn't believe it. Definately lucked out on this find.
A good place to look is autotraderonline.com and click on the classic car site. Enter in the type of truck you want and hit search. There are 100+ of 150's & 250's from about '72 on up to '79. Most are located in the northwest. Washington & Oregon seem to have some of the nicest ones around.

yes it was all part of what was called the "northland special" I think. My truck was going to be shiped to Alaska if dad had not bought it in Seattle new back in '75. somewhere around this mess of stuff in this house I have all the orignal paperwork and window sticker and it tells me all that groovy info.
