I know that this post exists, but I can't find it. I'm realy sory to bug everyone with the same thing over, but I need to know how to improve the gas mileage on my 98 3.0 4x4 70k miles. I remember hearing something about something on the fuel rail that can go bad and cause poor mileage. I am only getting about 13 mpg, and it seems as though I should be getting considerably better than that. Any help you guys have would be greatly appreciated. If I can't figure something out, I am going to have to get rid of my ranger.
Oh can I relate to your dilemna. My 96 3.0 4x4 only got about 13-14 (on a good day). I got frustrated and changed the fuel filter, air filter, cleaned the MAF, cleaned the throttle body, as well as the EGR and I now get a whopping 16-17 mpg. I think the 4x4 Ext cabs like mine are just gas guzzlers to begin with. Try those cheap repairs first and see if it helps. If only they'd come out with a hybrid mini truck....what a HOT seller that would be.
Well it has had this type of mialege for at least the last two years. That is how long I've owned it. I don't put around like an old lady, but I am not at WOT all the time either. I like to get up to traffic speed fairly quickly, but I rarely push past half throttle. Most of my driving is out in the country. I've got a fuel filter on the way, but what's the best way to clean the maf?
Thought the 3.0 was the "green" engine... low emissions, high economy, little green leaf on the tailgate.
On my '04 4x4 extended cab 4.0 Ranger with 5 speed I get 19-20 highway, which is mostly what I drive as we live out in the country. I do drive like a grampa, which I will be in January.
