I'm having trouble tracking down a sound comming from my 78 F1oo. Every time I put my foot on the gas the motor hammers away loudly. At idle, or when I'm coasting it goes away...probably an exaust leak? If so, I cant find it...It's driving me crazy! Any ideas?
1947hd have you pulled the rocker covers and checked for excess clearance. the valve train in my 351m has 172000 on it and it makes a fair amount of noise while being driven. it makes no noise when its cold and idle fairly quiet. i had mine up on the lift at the local muffler shop and couldnt find any evidence of an exhaust leak.
At the risk of sounding silly, check your timing. I have a 78 with a 302 and it is notorious for preingnition spark knock if the gas octane is too low or if the timing gets bumped up too high. Ford's need a lot of advance to make power, and the timing specs for that motor are on the borderline. Of course, it may not be spark knock you are hearing.
i have a 79 e 250 with a rebuilt engine, about 20000 miles on it, started the same knock after about 500 miles. turned out to be a wristpin knock on 1 cylinder and a broken skirt on the oppisite cylinder. noisey little feller but ran all that time before teardown.
If the noise is in tune with engine speed and it only does it when their is a load on the engine and trans, might check to see if the flywheel is clear of that sheet metal plate between engine and trans. Mine had a small dent from changing the exhaust doughnuts and did this awfull clattering when it was in drive and I accelerated.
HD,
You could have a rod knocking. Didn't anyone else think of that? Hammering/knocking are descriptions of a worn connecting rod. Check your oil pressure. It will usually be very low when a rod is knocking.
Check your oil for tiny metal shavings (bearings). You can usually see them on the dipstick just after a short drive.
Good Luck,
