A few weeks ago, I met a girl at the race track...I got to know her good enough now, to where I have met her dad. when i told him i have a 400 in my truck, he told me about a time, back in the 70's or 80's when he saw a 60's mustang with a 400 embarass a similar camaro with a 383 stroker in it...
I was wondering if anyone here has any comparison numbers for a 400 matched up against a 383 Chevy stroker...
My truck has a 400 in it, and i am building a station wagon with an FE motor next. After that i am going to build an old 30's or 40's ford truck...and while some people want to see me do a wicked Cleveland or FE for it, i would like to do a 400 for it, since i feel i have learned alot about the 335 series motors already...
Does anyone have input here....?? I was just a little bit suprised to meet a chevy guru who gave credit to the 400...most of the Ford people i meet dont even think as highly about the 400 as he did...
It is for that reason that the 400 was banned from most local race tracks by rules like the "intake had to be stock", etc. It embarrased the Cheby guys. If Ford had just made some 4V versions...

Since it was a Chevy guy I'd be willing to bet he was mistaken about the motor. 400s never came in Mustangs. Although a swap is possible, there are no parts available so it would have been difficult. Back then, I had enough problems finding swap headers for a 429.
I have to give credit to the 400 even though I consider myself an FE supporter. I think the 400 has been over looked and not given the respect it deserves. I was talking to a champion pull truck owner from Maine who is using a 400 with good success.
I was under the impression the 400 would not fit in a Mustang without cutting the shock towers. Is that correct? I had always believed that was why the 400 never gained a lot of popularity.
