Things to look for in a 2001 PS

I am going to look at a 2001 F250 Powerstroke this weekend. Is there anything I should look for specifically? I have read through some posts and the main thing I see with these trucks is the cam position sensor. Anything else?

Thanks,
burnan

DON'T LAUGH AT THIS. But if it's an auto trans. Smell the transmission fluid and check it for color. Automaitc Transmissions are the weak link in these rigs as far as I know. The dealer where I bought mine laughed when I pulled the dip stick while I looking and I about passed up the truck just because of him...I'm just like that....check out history of fluid changes also if available. See, I'm just like that, I like to see it in writing. But you still can't beleive every thing you read... Don't let the previous owner push you.

After lurking around the forum doing research and taking notes. I found one I liked took it for a test drive to the house (about 3 miles) looked at everything for about 20 minutes. Took the air tube off looked at the turbo and wheel for dusting. And a few obvious things. Your on the right track by asking these guys won't lead you wrong. Take notes, it worked for me. That's my $.01.

Isn't the 2001 the year for the "mechanical diode" in the trans? I know there are some date codes to narrow down whether that truck has one of those infernal things in the tranny. You don't want one. They are the REAL weak link, and you need to insure you don't have one. Maybe somebody installed a rebuilt without one already.

Someone else can better elaborate on this.

Yep, bug juice is right...smell the tranny fluid to make sure it doesn't smell burnt (obviously) and make sure it is red...not black..

thanks

Thanks everyone. I am glad nobody recommended a taste test on the tranny fluid. Is it possible for the fluid to look good but smell burnt? For example if they just changed out burnt fluid in an effort to cover up a bad tranny.

I am going to look at a 2002 PS too. Do 2002 tansmissions have a better reputation?

Thanks again.
