won't run

my '78 f150 4x4 will not run unless i hold the pedal to the floor and i will only choke and sputter. the 300 inline has always had a lifter tick. i don't know what is wrong. help please !

sounds like a carb problem to me. make sure you have a good air/fuel mixture and you're getting good vacuum.
