Front Wheel Play

While in the process of replacing the radius arm bushings on my 76 F100 4x4 I noticed that there was a slight movement (top to bottom) of the front wheel, as though the lug nuts were loose. I was checking the ball joints for wear. My son observed the ball joints from underneath the truck while I moved the wheel back and forth. He observed no movement of the ball joints. Could the wheel bearings need replacement? How can I verify which are worn and might need replacing? How difficult is it to replace wheel bearings on a 4x4?

Its not very difficult, you just need a special 4 pronged socket for the jamb nuts tho, available at just about any parts store.
However, odds are they just need to be cleaned, repacked and properly adjusted. Does the wheel spin smooth, or is it somewhat rough?
I'd just dis-assemble them, and take a look. if they are severely discolored, or any kind of flaking, then they need replacing. if not, clean, repack and your set to go!

The wheel does spin freely without any rough spots.

Thanks for the quick response...

yes i would just pull them apart and give them a clanning and repac, mine in my truck were just a little loose, but if you catch it early it should be fine
