overheating ??

I'm perplexed and researched threads that did not address problem. I know that I read a thread about a motor that was overheating and the top hose was really hard- releaved if cap off. I have the same problem but am not necessarliy overheating (need a new, accurate guage that i will get tomorrow).

I was spitting out fuild- rather small amounts- replaced cap with 13# napa. Ran it with cap off and never really got a lot of fluid flowing- not like I've seen in other radiators anyway but figure the top hose wouldn't bulge if the thermostat was out- will pick one up to morrow as well just in case.

I idled it for 20+ min with mod operating temp- I think (guage read normal-didn't boil)- but as soon as I tighten cap the top hose hardens up. Was thinking air lock- if so ---what to do??

thanks Amigo's

well without the cap in place it will boil the coolant the hose getting hard is pressure building in the lines that is normal.

Measure the pressure but with an immediate pressure rise it sounds like a headgasket leak or something that is allowing combustion gas to enter the cooling system. Some auto parts stores can measure your system pressure.

thats right- combustion gasses- that was on the thread that I couldn't find. Not the answer that i was neessarily wanting to hear though. I'll look into it some more and will need to get going on my build eh?

Gashog...it only builds pressure in the top hose with the cap on and it is a lot of pressure...like ready to burst the hose.

I first noticed it while running the truck on a 3-4 mile casual to check it out after fixing an exhaust leak then experimented after that.
