Wanting to do what mods/upgrades I can to a '91 F350 to increase mileage and maintain towing ability. After reading the forum for a while I have ideas and wanted to get feedback from you all. I want to maintain 65 mph pulling about 7-8K lbs and a load in the bed, and win the 20 mpg contest (j/k, good info in that thread). This is in the 1800-3000 rpm range when cruising.
1.) headers, high flow muffler and cat ... was looking at the Thorleys .... long tubes and smaller diameter ... stock cat is good if it's not plugged? stock muffler is quite restrictive?
2.) add more spark to ensure complete combustion ... not sure how yet ... simple coil swap?
3.) increase intake efficiency ... I haven't found a FIPK and am not conviced it'd help much ... any ideas?
I have a budget of about $2K and want to include bigger tranny cooler and temp gauge.
*bumpup* 'really looking for some feedback here; I'd like to 'stand on your shoulders' as it were and use some of the knowledge and experience I know many of you have and I don't.
You might want to look into a cam, I don't know how aggressively you want to mod the engine. Comp Cams has a cam that will work with the stock computer, has very strong torque andexcellent gas mileage. It's a bit on the high side, around $225 or so I think. I'm using it in a moter that I'm in the process of building (wouldn't happen to have a spare set of E7 or F3 heads, would you?), so I can't tell you how it runs quite yet, but everything i've read about it has been glowing.
This may be a dumb question, but can I swap cams without pulling the engine? 'could pull the radiator I suppose to slide the cam in. If I were doing a cam, would I want to look for an earlier timing chain setup while I was at it? (seems I read something about the earlier timing chains being better)
I really don't know, it depends on the truck, how the engine bay is set up, etc, but I think you can. You'll have to remove the radiator and maybe the front grill, but I know that on most engines, this is possible. Please remember, though, that I've never, ever done it in my life, so i'm really talking out of my ***. As long as you're replaceing the cam, though, yeah you'll probably want to get an aftermarket timing chain, a nice double-roller or somthing.
Honestly, my technical knowlage of the subject is really, really minimal, I would ask someone who was more experianced before actually ordering anything, i'm just hoping to give some ideas.
Porting the heads is your best bet EFI systems have a better responce to porting than hot cams. More power from porting than cam change period. A better intake is a issue also that could be ported too.
First thing I would look at is how easy is it to push your vehicle in neutral. The easier the better. I too am working on better economy giving away tips here. I am doing mine in stages though as things wear out muffler is my next step and looking at aerodynamics too. I also have a cap on my bed the taller one. hat hurs me too. So do the dually tires. Road tread is better than all-terrain.
